Cape Breton Island

Hi all,

Last Wednesday we set off for Cape Breton Island, north of Nova Scotia. We stopped off at a relative's cottage near to New Glasgow. Was great to see them again, spent a bit of time with them last time I was over. The sun was out so we spent a few hours relaxing on the deck over looking the sea...bliss! The drive up to Cape Breton Island was fantastic! The views were incredible, lake views, trees, beautiful homes.

We arrived in Louisbourg around 8.30 that evening, after checking into the hotel, we were informed that everything shuts at 6pm in town! So we had to head to Sydney, a half an hour drive away, to grab a bite to eat. The next day we woke up to awful weather, cold, windy, rainy, grey...not what I was expecting! Anyway we headed of to the Louisbourg fortress, the reason why we came to this town. The Louisbourg fortress was the last stronghold the French had in New France. It has been maintained and kept in the same style as it would have been in that time, end of the 1700s. It was fascinating to learn all about soldiers travelling from France in order to have a better life, which clearly wasn't that great. They employ people to just walk around in the clothing of that time period and act like they are still in that era. So spent a while chatting to the 'soldiers' who were 'on duty' and they gave us an account of what life was like there. Was a very enjoyable day despite the bad weather.

We spent the rest of the day driving round and visiting some of the towns. We visited one place called Baddeck where Alexander Graham Bell flew his first plane from, there is now a museum commemorating his life and work.

We arrived back at the house around 9.30 on Thursday night, trip was lovely, just wish the weather would have been better!
